Why was John the Baptist immersing people in the Jordan—and why was immersion necessary to prepare the way for the Messiah?
In this episode of the Sighted Moon Podcast, Ryan Nall and Joseph Dumond step outside the traditional Christian understanding of “baptism” and examine the practice through its Hebrew and Temple context: mikvah, ritual purity, repentance, and preparing to draw near to Yehovah.
John wasn’t introducing an idea disconnected from Israel’s Scriptures and worship. His ministry called Israel to repentance and purification in preparation for the coming Messiah. That raises an important question: What did immersion mean to a first-century Jewish audience?
We explore the relationship between mikvah and repentance, the principle that immersion accomplishes nothing while someone continues clinging to sin, and the connection between ritual purification and approaching the Temple. We also examine the sacrificial system—not simply as a mechanism for dealing with sin, but as part of Israel’s means of drawing near to God.
Then the discussion turns to John’s prophecy concerning two very different immersions: the Holy Spirit and fire. Are both promises of blessing, or does John contrast the purification of the repentant with the judgment awaiting the unrepentant?
Finally, we examine a unique form of purification that ordinary immersion could not accomplish: purification from contact with the dead—and why that subject may have profound implications for understanding biblical prophecy and the last days.
