Why did darkness cover the land for three hours while Yeshua hung on the tree—and why did it happen at the very time of day when the sun should have been shining brightest?
In this episode of the Sighted Moon Podcast, Ryan and Joseph Dumond begin a deep study into one of the Bible’s most fascinating and recurring themes: darkness and the presence of God.
At Mount Sinai, Moses entered into the “thick darkness where God was.” At the crucifixion, darkness covered the land from the sixth hour until the ninth hour, immediately before Yeshua cried out the opening words of Psalm 22: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Was this darkness caused by a solar eclipse? The astronomical circumstances surrounding Passover make that explanation extraordinarily difficult: Passover occurs near a full moon, while a solar eclipse requires a new moon positioned between the earth and the sun. And no ordinary eclipse could account for three hours of darkness.
But the mystery goes much deeper.
