While much of the Jewish world is preparing for the Feast of Trumpets, we have already completed Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret. So who is early—and who is late?
In this episode, we examine one of the most important questions surrounding the biblical calendar: What actually determines the beginning of the year?
Rather than beginning the year with Tishrei and Rosh Hashanah, Exodus identifies Aviv as the first month. We discuss the barley harvest, the biblical agricultural cycle, the development of Jewish calendar traditions, and why the distinction between the first and seventh months matters.
Then we turn to a fascinating mystery surrounding Shemini Atzeret, Simchat Torah, and John 10:22:
“And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.”
Most readers immediately identify this “Feast of Dedication” with Hanukkah on Kislev 25. But when John 7–10 is examined as a continuous narrative beginning with Sukkot, does that assumption still hold? Could John be describing something connected to the seventh month instead?
We explore:
• Aviv vs. Tishrei as the beginning of the biblical year
• How barley determines the first month
• Why our feast dates differ from the traditional Jewish calendar
• The meaning of Shemini Atzeret
• The development of Simchat Torah and the annual Torah-reading cycle
• Biblical “summer” and “winter” seasons
• John 7–10 and Yeshua’s attendance at the feasts
• The meaning of “dedication” (Hanukkah) in John 10:22
• Whether John 10:22 necessarily refers to Kislev 25
• How tradition can sometimes obscure what Scripture actually says
The goal isn’t to reject Jewish tradition simply because it is tradition. It’s to test our traditions—Christian and Jewish alike—against Scripture, history, and the agricultural signs Yehovah established.
Is Aviv really the first month? Is the traditional calendar one month late? And have we misunderstood the Feast of Dedication in John 10?
Join us as we dig into the Scriptures and examine the evidence.
